El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant: A Strategic Shift for Egypt’s Energy Future

Egypt is undergoing a strategic transformation in its energy sector, diversifying its electricity sources to ensure reliability and meet growing demand. At the forefront of this shift is the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, one of the country’s flagship national projects set to significantly enhance energy security.

Located on Egypt’s northwestern coast, the plant is scheduled for full operation by 2030. Built in cooperation with Russia, the massive project will feature four advanced reactor units and provide a substantial portion of Egypt’s increasing electricity needs.

According to projections for Egypt’s electricity generation mix in 2030, the El Dabaa plant is expected to supply approximately 12% of the nation’s total electricity. It will operate alongside other energy sources, with renewable energy (such as solar and wind) contributing around 13%hydropower at 4%, and natural gas remaining the dominant source at 70%. Another 1% will come from other sources.

The El Dabaa project represents a major step toward diversifying Egypt’s energy mix. It will help stabilize the national grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support the country’s ambitious sustainable development and economic growth goals.
