Red meat is increasingly becoming a “special occasion” food in Egypt. Our chart shows that between 2018 and 2024, average per–person consumption has hovered around 7–8 kg per year – well below the 13 kg benchmark line. Even the small rise in 2023 wasn’t sustained, with 2024 slipping back again.

Behind these numbers are familiar pressures: higher prices, weaker purchasing power, and a shift towards cheaper protein sources like poultry, offal, and plant-based options. For many families, buying beef or lamb regularly is no longer realistic.
Tracking per-capita meat consumption helps us read both living standards and changing food habits. Do you think your own red-meat intake is above or below the national average?
