How Much Do Egypt’s Economic Sectors Consume from Oil and Natural Gas?
A breakdown of energy consumption by sector – based on 2023 data
Energy is the backbone of any economy, and in Egypt, oil and natural gas remain the primary sources powering key industries, transportation, and essential services. Understanding how different sectors consume petroleum products helps explain cost pressures, subsidy requirements, and future energy planning.
OWL Research analyzed official data from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to identify which sectors consume the largest share of oil and gas annually.
🔍 Key Findings: Which Sectors Consume the Most Energy?
- Electricity Sector – 30 million tons
The electricity sector is the largest consumer of natural gas and petroleum products. Power plants rely heavily on natural gas, making this sector the cornerstone of national energy consumption. - Transportation – 21 million tons
The transport sector ranks second, driven by cars, buses, trucks, and logistics operations. Fuel demand in this sector directly affects daily costs for citizens and businesses alike. - Industry – 13 million tons
Industrial activity—from cement and steel to chemicals and manufacturing—requires high volumes of fuel, especially natural gas. - Residential & Commercial Use – 6 million tons
Homes, shops, and service facilities consume gas for cooking, heating, and commercial operations. - Petroleum Sector Itself – 5 million tons
Refineries, extraction, and processing facilities also require energy to operate. - Roads & Construction – 2 million tons
Construction machinery, contracting operations, and road-building rely on diesel and fuel oil. - Agriculture & Irrigation – 0.3 million tons
Fuel is used for water pumps, tractors, and agricultural machinery—though overall consumption remains small relative to other sectors. - Tourism – 0.05 million tons
Hotels, transportation services, and tourism activities consume minimal volumes compared to larger industries.
📌 What This Tells Us
- Electricity production is the most energy-intensive component of Egypt’s economy.
- Transportation and industry remain major drivers of fuel demand.
- Tourism and agriculture consume far smaller shares but are still important for economic planning.
- Understanding consumption patterns helps policymakers design better subsidy systems, energy diversification strategies, and efficiency programs.
