Over the last decade, Egypt’s pistachio imports have turned this nut from a niche luxury into a Ramadan trend. Imports fell to just $7 million in 2017, but then surged, peaking above $30 million in the early 2020s before easing and settling around $22 million in 2024.

Behind these numbers is a clear shift in consumer taste. Pistachios are now central to many desserts, ice creams and gift boxes, and social media has amplified demand for “premium” ingredients on the iftar table. Despite currency pressure and high prices, Egyptians are still willing to pay extra for small indulgences that carry a sense of celebration and status.
As we head into Ramadan 2025, pistachios look set to remain one of the most visible symbols of this premiumization trend in the Egyptian food market.
